Because the structure reminds of a landscape, but the details let you know it's a tree bark surface. The landscape structure seems also to be 3-dimensional, whereas in reality it's a flat surface. The lanscape suggestion is enhanced by the white parts of the bark (looks like snow), and the wrinkled part (looks like a ravine) of the bark. The wrinkled and the white parts are probably caused by the fact that the species is a hybrid between the totally white-barked populus alba (white polar) and another, regular-coloured poplar (forgot the name).
