Hè, hè!

Posted by Illuci (Hurdegaryp, Netherlands) on 8 June 2007 in Transportation.

The Dutch words "hè, hè" is kind of relief exclamation when you just finished a tough piece of work or had to wait a long time. Here it applies to both situations: the railroad crossing series is over, and when the train passes by you only have to wait till the bar lets you through. Foreigners find "hè, hè" one of the weirdest Dutch expressions, and the Dutch themselves are often a bit annoyed wehn someone else says it. I'm not allowed to say it by my wife, she finds (like most other Dutch) it belongs to aged people who are quickly tired.
