Royal Fern (Osmunda Regalis)

Posted by Illuci (Hurdegaryp, Netherlands) on 17 June 2007 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

This kind of fern has been rare in our country in the years 1950-1990, but now she can be seen more often, especially on marshy locations. Its roots were much sought-for by orchid growers who used them as fertile soil for their plants, but that's forbidden now. I found this one in an area that has been given back to nature (with natural, higher ground water level) since 1991, before that it was grassland for cattle. It's a tourist area for restseekers near Earnewâld (where I "park" my sailing boat), the authorities maintain dry walking paths with long bridges through the swamps. Very worthwhile to pay a visit to.
