Stavoren is located at the Ysselmeer, a Dutch lake separated from the North Sea by a dyke since about 1935. Before that, it was simply a niche of the North Sea and was called "Zuiderzee" (Southern Sea). Stavoren is renown for its legend about the Lady of Stavoren.
