Harbour entrance of Heeg

Posted by Illuci (Hurdegaryp, Netherlands) on 18 August 2007 in Transportation and Portfolio.

I read on an information sign, that Heeg is an old village traditionally busy with hay transportation over water and eel fishing. Both businesses are now replaced by water tourism but some remnants are surviving. The eel was that famous that Heeg sold it to the UK, until 1839 they had a special quay in London for the rich Britains. I love smoked eel very much, in a neighboring village (Garyp) the Frisian championships eel-smoking will be held on September 1, I think I will be there and make some pictures for your appetite.

At the background you see eel nets and part of an iron sculpture which I think is intended to mark the harbour entrance like a lighthouse-at-daylight.

This day was special for Heeg, because there were many traditional ships to house the crews of the skûtsjes that took part in the skûtsje-races (Skûtsjes are traditional freight ships driven by sails - I show you one tomorrow and see also this picture of mine.
