Hawthorn with moss

There is an island in Lake Huron called Manitoulin Island, actually the biggest lake island in the world, (about 130 km long and 35 km wide), where there are so many hawthorns that the nickname for the 12000 people that inhabit the place is "Haweaters". They even make an ice cream with hawthorn syrup. Very good stuff!

@Wolfgang Prigge: Thanks Wolfgang, I didn't know the berries were edible, and I went to Google to find a very elaborate, Dutch site with all info about medicinal and culinary use of the plant, it's indeed very versatile and you can make jam (othe fruits to add because the berries are rather floury) and you can grind the dry berries to flour you can use to bake bread, the young leaves are tasy in salades, the plant is good against heart and blood vessel diseases, etc. Thanks for learning me this because there are lots and lots of hawthorne trees around here, maybe I'm going to start a business with it :), but I'll sure have some experiments!
