De Kempen #1: Mill in Bergeijk

"Who comes first, grinds first"
Old proverb, originally a rule from a 13th century Saxon law book: the (Sachsenspiegel)

This weekend I went to my brother in Bergeijk and visited several places with him. From here on I alternate between "De Kempen" (the area where Bergeijk is located, partly in the Netherlands, partly in Belgium) and Tytsjerksteradiel, just like I alternate physically between the two areas.

I chose a quote this time which is typical for Dutch culture. It stems from the time during which farmers brought their wheat to the mill for grinding. The millers didn't make appointments but ground the wheat of the first comers first, so they also had the profit first. This so-called FIFO system sounds fair, but its drawback is that Dutch people are sometimes greedy and too eager to be the first in queues :)
