"His lectures (What he says, His preaches, His poems, etc.) are always so sawn-off" Dutch way of saying, meaning: "His lectures etc. are always so boring and dull".
I think this is not inspired by an image such as this one, vivid orange spots between the brownish green of a February road verge.

On the side of the road in February you found a little treasure, Erik! Beautiful contrasting colours and the stump was made to look, somehow,artistic!

When I saw the small pic I thought this was a mushroom picture. But then I saw it was a cut tree. Wow, look at those colors!!! Nice. :)
