Lauwersmeer: view from ferry pier restaurantPosted by Illuci (Hurdegaryp, Netherlands) on 5 March 2008 in Transportation. To and fro, to and fro, You see here the view on the pier of the ferry-boat to the Wadden-island Schiermonnikoog (only pronounceable by Dutch natives and completely integrated immigrants, the Friesian name for it is even more complicated: Skiermûntseach" :) The small, but beautiful island is named after the munks (munk = monnik) who had a monastery there in the Middle Ages and wore grey habits (grey = schier or skier in Medieval Dutch). The extension "oog" means "island". So the name means "Island of the grey munks". It's 45 minutes of sailing. to nothing but dunes, beach, wetland and a couple of cute little villages with super dining and café opportunities. My other photo-site: click here for Flickr
