Benedictine Sculpturing 1

When I was the guest of the Benedictine monks (2006) in their abbey in Vaals I had the privilege of visiting the mason workshop. The brother here is working on a statue for the garden of a customer. The blur you see is caused by the dust, the mouth cap is not for nothing! I like the expression of effort on the face of the artist.

You caught his concentration well. The piece he is working on is also very interesting with an Inuit to the right.

@vu@granby - Wolfgang Prigge: I can imagine that a Canadian is glad to see an Inuit. I find them a fascinating people, I can remember reading a book about them when I was 5 years old (with many pictures of course:). Kajaks, weeks of looking for a seal, polar bears, a totally different and very harsh world, my admiration was limitless.

@ManuelaR: Thanks Manuela, now you can see it on a pc screen. Aweful to have such an allergy, maybe you could also work with clay like Rabbit?

What a wonderful and interesting sculpture, it must have been a great priviliage to see the Brother at his work.

@MaryB: Thanks MaryB, my whole stay was a very, vey unique experience. I saw one of my highschool classmates who entered the order in the same abbey, again after 40 years. We are still in contact and this late spring I intend to go again.

I think sculpture done in the way that you must (take away material) to show the image is fantastic. I have only done this once or twice and is VERY hard for me to do. I'm used to MOLDING my sculptures into shape.

@Rabbit: Thanks Rabbit, it's a plaisure for me to show something related to moulding or shaping art also, although the picture hasn't got the quality of yours.

Hi Iluci, The very special thing i like about this photo is the little piece of stone on his head. Do all the Benedictine monks have these little stones on their head? ----> Equal monks, equal caps. (means: people in the same position have equal right and duties)
I add this dutch proverb, otherwise your contribution is not complete.
