Old House with Roses

Posted by Illuci (Hurdegaryp, Netherlands) on 19 July 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

Maybe not the most exciting picture, but I always like views resembling 18th- and 19th-century paintings. The house is located directly along the main street of our village, so the rose garden and the tree are opposite it at the other side of the main road. Here it seems at first sight if the rose garden belongs to the house but that's illusion, maybe the owner would have liked that. It's a pity that Friesians always want to have everything "neat and tidy" (prejudice?) so the roof is covered with "proper" glossy roof tiles. (I would have chosen a rougher model)

The tree is quite old, because red beeches like this are used as landmarks on points where pieces of land came together. This one stands at a T-crossing of roads. It can grow here because Hurdegaryp is on sandy soil. A few miles to the West no beech can grow because of the wet clay and/or peat soil.
